Browsing MSNBC headlines and reading the currrent news on my laptop has become my morning routine. I often head to the discussion forum to read what the Newsvine masses have to offer and this morning I had to shake my head with disdain and smirk with a bit of cynical humor. It has all become too predictible. Have you noticed the recurring themes no matter what the article has to say? I have and it is bordering on ridiculous.
Regardless of the topic, the remarks eventually split along the lines of liberals and conseravtives. President Obama is bound to come up in the remarks and the idea of the piece is lost to nasty coomments on both sides of the political realm. This morning I read the piece about Sarah Palin and her remarks in a light hearted speech addressing the press corps. I think I must of snapped around remark sevety-eight and decided to limp over to my own Newsvine page to write about my reaction.
Let's start with the liberal's; people, you for the most part, are educated human beings who continually find the need to bash everything a conservative has to say. What starts out as an opportunity to express what I hope is an educated opinion turns quickly into a Bush/McCain/Palin bash fest. I want to read what you think about the issues, not a personal attack on Palin's looks or what President Bush did in what is now ancient history. Your man is in the White House, but the defensiveness goes on; what's up with that? Sarah Palin is not your favorite. To some, she is the female representative of Satan himself. We all KNOW she quit her term as Governor of Alaska before her term expired, we all KNOW you think she is a liar and none of us ever expect you to like her or her political stance. We want to know what you think of the issues at hand.
Conservatives, don't think you're any better. Barak Obama is our President, have some respect. NO, have a great deal of respect. You were the first people who jumped all over the libs for their often horrendous remarks about President Bush, but you are doing exactly the same thing to our current Commander in Chief. The people have voted and you lost. Be better than your liberal counterparts and choose to use some restraint. Name callling and unfounded accusations are a waste of everyone's time. Disagree with the President's policies, but stop acting like shrews by writing degrading comments. You lost this time, but your time will come again. When it does, you have no right to be angry with those who bash your candidate. You have been doing it for almost a year now and I'm sure you get the idea that pure hypocrisy makes any thinking person stop listening to your arguements on policy.
I am painfully aware that we live in a sexist world. Just once, however, I would like to read an opinion about a female in politics without speculation that she should pose for Playboy or not. Palin is the perfect example. I have read more comments about her physical beauty (or lack there of) than anything else. What does beauty have to do with ability to hold office? If a woman is unattractive, then we are subjected to that as well. I have yet to read any speculation that Joe Biden be featured in Playgirl magazine. I have read the word 'handsome' when referring to the current President, but not one about him taking his clothes off for a photo shoot. The women on the Hill who are less than attractive find themselves under such negative scrutiny it's awful. Even conservative guru Rush made the comment that 'no one wants to see a woman President age in office", please, that kind of degrading commentry is beneath us all...at least I hope it is beneath us.
We have many polarizing people in Washington on both side of the aisle. It is the discussion of their ideas and where they want to take the nation through legislation that is interesting, not speculation of their looks, sex lives, sexually preference or other unavoidable physical issues. These discussions seem to hit all time lows faster than ever before. We all have opinions, but they are just that, opinions. Opinion is NOT fact. Opinion is an individuals thoughts and ideas on the issues. A respectful dialouge backed up with an intelligent arguement is interesting. Calling other contributors names and making degrading comments about physicality is lowbrow and makes you sound uneducated. It is obviously much easier to name call than to write an informed opinion on an issue at hand.
Honestly, healthy debate makes this nation great, but that has changed into scathing insults and put downs. Did you know you can agree to disagree and still hang on to your own beliefs? Diverse thought breeds new ideas. In fact, if we all just stuck with honest opinions and ideas, others might listen and learn something. As it stands right now, many of Newsvine's contributors will never have their ideas read and considered because they are interspersed with insults and degrading words of hate.
I have become hesitent to offer my ideas. I don't want to read the next guy's offereing of what a stupid blonde I am or how my beliefs make me ignorrant or worse, what a complete waste of human flesh he might think I am; not because I feel hurt, no not at all, but because I was taught years ago not to cast my pearls before swine. Nasty, rude and ignorrant commentary accomplish nothing. It certainly keeps those like me out of the debate. It's not worth wasting my breath.
Let's all think, change our tactics and keep Newsvine's discussion forum from becoming the Jerry Springer Show of online discussion forums...at least we can't come to blows.
