The past few days were emotionally horrifying on the Vine. I have read more hate filled remarks than I ever hope to again. I don't understand why some people refuse to use facts to respond to articles seeded or written on Newsvine. The first thing I've noticed is that so many responders don't even read the articles, they just glance at the headline and go at it, following the thread as factual then add to the last comment without discovering for themselves what was stated in the piece. If the article is unclear or incomplete, never is further research considered before they add their ill informed two cents.
For example, http://world-news.newsvine.com/_news/2009/12/30/3695852-cops-girl-11-and-boyfriend-tried-to-kill-mom , regarding the 11 year old girl and her 15 year old boyfriend who tried to kill the girl's mother by burning her to death. The article stated ONLY that the mother had an argument with her child because she was caught stealing cigarettes. The comments began with no consideration of what the article reported and Viners had the mother as a drug addict, whore, bad mother, slut, white trash, and so many other disgusting words to describe a person who was doused with gas by her own child and then set aflame that I literally felt physically ill. The mother, the victim, will hopefully never read the words written by such hateful individuals that have not a single fact to back up what they wrote. Their words blamed the victim of a horrific crime as if she somehow deserved to be burned to death. Some idiot even brought race into the discussion saying 'they must be white, because black kids would have shot their mom in the head'. Is it only me, or is this beyond disturbing?
The next gem was, http://michaellonkouski.newsvine.com/_news/2009/12/30/3698837-rush-limbaugh-rushed-to-hospital-with-chest-pains, the article regarding Rush Limbaugh's health scare. I have never read such hate filled words. People actually wishing him dead, some even asking his death be slow and painful. I find this beyond repugnant and about as small minded as anything I can imagine. What about the issues? Debate what Limbaugh said, disagree with him, educate yourself regarding his show and the contents, then comment on why you disagree with him; but wish him death? That is utter garbage and beneath any intelligent debate.
I will only use these two examples, because they make my point more clearly than anything I could repeat or quote. My desire is for this to end. We live in a nation of many kinds of people with different belief systems and political leanings; this should be a good thing. It is one of the ideals we hold so dearly as Americans. Freedom of speech is a right granted by our Constitution, but we must use it responsibly. Know the facts before you comment and keep the hate out of the discussion. That's all thinking people see when those who contribute without the proper information to back their point and add hate-filled words to the issue at hand. We move on to the next comment, still reeling from the vitriol expressed and consequently any validity that may be hidden within a nasty tirade will never be heard or recognized as a point to be considered. We are far too horrified by the ugly comments to see past them. Thinking people want to know why you disagree or agree, how you came to that conclusion and what facts you have to back up your opinion. Writing ugly, nasty, hate-filled speech turns readers away from what may be an excellent point.
I am looking for people who desire healthy debate and intelligent exchange of ideas in a civil fashion. I am interested in meeting people that know the facts and can post comments that reflect their knowledge. It appears to me that the individuals who choose to use hate speech and comment without knowing the first thing about which they speak should be asked to leave Newsvine and join a neo-Nazi discussion group or a extremist hate group and have their ridiculous words shared with like minded people. That is not the majority of Newsvine contributors, but it seems the ugly minority rears their ugly voices more often than voices of reason. If it doesn't change, I say we who have the intelligence to debate with facts and reason find or start a new site and quickly delete any person who chooses to break with the rules of civilized discussion. Each side allowing the other their right to believe as they wish and responding with the manners, decorum and maturity it takes to have healthy debate.
